Truth and Beauty
I finished reading the book Brave New World today and upon completing the book I realized something. This something was that there are two kinds of people who define our society. Those people are the people who seek truths(scientists, journalists, and historians) and those who create beauty(writers, artists, and musicians). The inverse also holds true. Those who create truths and those who seek beauty.
The ones who create truth are those who wish people to blindly follow. Their weapons are propaganda and sly rhetoric. Those who seek beauty are much simpler. They seek things. They are materialists.
Truth and beauty are the two ideals that make our society what it is. Truth creates freedom and from freedom democracy. Without the inquistiveness of scientists and journalists we would still live in tyranny or oligarchy. Beauty, on the other hand, inspires and gives meaning to life. The feeling of awe when looking on a great masterpiece of art, such as Michelangelo’s Pieta, is one that no materials can give. The same goes for literature. The classics are classic because of their great capacity for this inspiration. This inspiration compels us to continue on this quest and harvest the fruits of our labors wherever those fruits fall.
